What is a Chemical Peel?

Both alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), as well as retinoids, can be used to achieve the results of a facial peel. What happens during a chemical peel?
Chemical peels procedure is simple and takes about a half hour. It includes a pre-peel cleanser to remove any trace of makeup or oil from the skin. The area will also be wiped with acetone alcohol to prevent uneven penetration. Chemical peels are applied in three simple steps. Step 1 is applied in 2-3 layers, depending on the desired penetration rate, and then left to air dry on the skin for about 10 minutes. Step 2 will then be applied and allowed to dry for about 5 minutes. Step 3 is applied last, and also left to dry for about 5 minutes.
What do I do after a chemical peel?
Chemical facial peels do require some special post-procedure care. After your treatment, you will be given a zinc oxide ointment that should be applied both immediately after your peel, as well as throughout the day as the face feels dry or tight. It is important not to pick at the face as it sheds old cells and heals.
